Week in Review: Double poles, field hockey and Veterans Day

The Town Council vented its frustration with the lack of removal of double utility poles, just one of the stories this week.

The lack of movement in removing double utility poles in town came to a head this week when Town Councilors let representatives from the Verizon, NStar, Comcast and RCN know how mad the situation has made them. Poles remaining on Pleasant Street have lead to the repaving project on the road to be delayed until after winter. Also Tuesday night, the Town Council approved a new set of "green" building codes, known as the Stretch Energy Code. By adopting the new building codes the town moved a step closer to qualifying for the state's Green Communities Program, which could result in grant money coming into town for renewable energy projects. Town Council Adopts 'Green' Building Code

The Stretch Energy Code requires more energy efficient construction in Watertown. Allows town to apply to be a Green Community.

Watertown is going green, with the Town Council's adoption, Tuesday, of building codes that require more energy efficient construction. Town councilors voted unanimously to adopt the Stretch Energy Code, new building codes based on the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code. The goal of the Stretch Code is to make construction at least 20 percent more energy efficient. When he first looked at the new code, Town Council Vice President Steve Corbett said he had his doubts. "I had misgivings (about adding new building requirements) because of the state of the economy, because this will increase the cost of construction," Corbett said.
