Bites Nearby: Lena's

The Chicken Margherita Sub at Lena's is one of many subs and pizzas at this 65-year-old eatery on Main Street.

We tried one of Lena's specialty subs – the Chicken Margherita. The chicken was nicely grilled and the add-ins fresh and fragrant: tomatoes, mozarella, basil leaves, and olive oil. And the bun was well-toasted, although the option of multi-grain bread would have added a richer texture. It was a satisfying meal and comes in either medium ($6.60) or large ($8.60). Lena's prides itself on having won a "best sandwich shop" in Waltham award several years running (from Market Surveys of America). They also serve many kinds of pizzas, calzones, panini, wraps and pasta dinners. Pizzas, their other specialty, come in either small ($11), large ($15) or Sicilian (thick crust and square: $18). The vibe: A small yet bright room, facing onto bustling …

Bites Nearby: Watch City Brewing Company

This Waltham pub and restaurant has become a mainstay on Moody Street since it opened in 1996.

The Watch City Brewing Company played a key role in the revival of Waltham's Moody Street in the 1990s, along with the Embassy Cinema down the street. It's still going strong as a place to have a beer and appetizers with a Red Sox game or sit down for a full dinner. The chef makes new specials each day and there are about a half dozen seasonal beers brewed on the premises, such as "Steam Punk Ale," "Chocolate Thunder Porter" and "Fenway Fungo Scottish Wee Light." A bit of trivia: it's one of the only local breweries in the U.S. owned by a woman. Suggested dish: A popular appetizer is the buffalo wings, with both chicken wings and drumsticks. They're spicy and smoky, and have a salty tang. The celery sticks and blue cheese dressing on the …

Bites Nearby: Tom Can Cook

This "Asian fusion" restaurant in Waltham offers a little of everything.

Waltham's Tom Can Cook wants to satisfy almost any preference for Asian food –Thai, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and Szechwan. This "fusion" philosophy has both advantages and disadvantages, since it provides lots of different choices, yet can be a bit ambitous. This restaurant's menu is not overwhelming and there's a good variety of dishes: curries, seafood, noodle soups, tempura, miso soup, iced Thai tea and more. There are lots of fun appetizers too, including chicken satay, tempura, calamari and scallion pancakes. While we visited, a couple nearby was eating a vegetarian dish with vegetables and tofu. They found it quite good, with the peanut sauce not too sweet or spicy and served on the side. It's not the most authentic ethnic …

Bites Nearby: Mi Tierra

Authentic, fresh, satisfying food from Central America.

Don't be deceived by the modest exterior and somewhat off-the-beaten-track location of Mi Tierra Restaurant, which is up at 585 Moody St. in Waltham. Inside, it's spacious and attractive and, most importantly, the food is good, fresh and inexpensive. It's a family-owned and operated business, so the staff is both friendly and conscientious. Suggested dish: Many of the offerings contain similar ingredients: corn tortillas or tostadas, black beans, white rice, guacamole, plantains, chicken and pork. It's the delicate seasonings and fresh hot sauce (placed in a bottle on the table) that make them stand out. One Guatemalan specialty is the pupusa, a corn tortilla stuffed with pork or cheese ($2). There are also plenty of vegetarian offerings, …

Bites Nearby: Wilson's Diner

A fixture on Main Street in Waltham for 66 years that still serves basic, economical food.

Wilson's Diner, at 507 Main St. in Waltham, is known for its all-day breakfast, which means until 3 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. on weekends. The food is simple and unpretentious, and so are the prices. The place could be in New Hampshire or the Berkshires. Wilson's can get busier on weekends, but most of the time there's plenty of room, despite its compact interior. The tough economy is making it harder on many of his regulars, according to owner and cook Arthur Karrs. "People have less money and maybe just eat a late breakfast," he says. What to eat: You can't go wrong with one or two eggs, which come with toast and home fries, and for a dollar or two more bacon, ham, sausage, corn beef hash, or other items, including a couple of Greek …

Bites Nearby: Casa d'Italia Imported Grocery

This small Italian storefront on Newton Street in Waltham is both a grocery store and a deli.

Service is friendly and fast in this 30-year-old establishment at 203 Newton St. in Waltham, which doubles as a grocery store and a deli serving subs, salads, and pasta dishes. While waiting for an order, wander through the aisles of groceries, for chips, imported cookies (pizzelle, biscotti, etc.), Snapple drinks and sodas, and, if you're really adventurous, a can of octopus in olive oil. What to get at the deli: The ingredients are made fresh on the premises, so it's just a matter of whether you prefer a cold roast pork (porketta) sub or a hot eggplant one, or pasta with homemade sausage or eggplant. Vibe: It's like walking into a store in the North End circa 1965: a customer or two chatting with the owner while waiting for a proscuitto …
