LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Watertown Town Council Should Support the Economic Development Report

Watertown-resident Marjorie N. Feld writes that she and a group of residents was disappointed to see the economic development report be sent to the Town Council's subcommittee for more discussion and possible changes.

Dear Patch readers: Members of Watertown Coalition for Sustainable Development were pleased to read the recent report commissioned by the Town Council, the Strategic Framework for Sustainable Development, (available at http://www.watertown-ma.gov/DocumentView.aspx?DID=3499). Based on multiple public meetings and prodigious research, the report makes clear what Watertown residents want for their town: a thoughtful blending of building, preservation, and redevelopment that will enhance our tax revenues and our quality of life. Watertown Planning Ahead with New Economic Development Study

Citizens, planners, and the Town Councilors gathered to debate a "master" economic plan for Watertown, but it was referred to a Council Subcommittee.

The need for a master plan to control economic development in Watertown, a plan that balances economic growth with housing, transportation, recreational, and other needs, might seem like a no-brainer in 2011 – especially since Watertown has never had such a plan. But as the town councilors, town planners, private consultants, and private citizens who attended a special meeting in Town Hall on June 15 found out, "the devil is in the details," as Councilor Tony Palomba put it. The hearing was called to discuss and vote on the Economic Development Study, which three private consultants have been working on for more than a year, and which has had several public hearings already.
