The following information was provided by the Watertown Republican Town Committee: On January 31, 2013, the State Committee once again will vote to elect a third State Chair in a since 2009. Save a few bright spots, the MA-GOP has suffered consistent electoral defeats and shrinking party registration for decades. Hence we find ourselves at an important crossroad. The single most pressing question for the State Committee is whether or not to continue the same old failed policies that allows one high profile candidate at the top of the ticket to install his or her person as Chairman of the State Party. It is the opinion of the Watertown Republican Committee that we must abandon the aforementioned policy. The MA-GOP can ill afford to direct …

To the editor, In his letter to the editor, District D Councilor and Law Student Kenneth Woodland, implies that someone has committed libel and slander when commenting on his involvement vis-a-vis the Citizens United Resolution which the Town Council wisely rejected. [Editor's Note: the Town Council did not vote on the resolution.] He accuses people promoting conspiracy theories about backroom arm-twisting. And then he threatens to prove his “legal skills.” These are the facts. I wrote a letter to the editor in which I said a group of people encouraged by Kenneth Woodland used a charter provision to bring this matter before the Council. The fact is; encouragement can take many forms. The Councilor supported the measure. Therefore to …

Thank your giving me the opportunity to serve as your state senator in the coming legislative session. Thank you also to my ballot opponent, Republican State Committeeman Steve Aylward, who ran a gracious and constructive campaign. The next two years are likely to be tough financially. The economic recovery is still soft and some of the possible outcomes of the debate in Washington could be very costly to the state. Also, it seems clear that we are nowhere near the end of the long-term economic transformation that began several decades ago. Globalization and automation -- while providing us with all kinds of inexpensive goods and services – will hold down incomes for people at every education level. Check my website, willbrownsberger.…

It was easy to become politically aware in the tumultuous times of the sixties and early seventies.
After I went to the Democratic Caucus in Watertown on Saturday, I started thinking about when I first became politically aware. People become politically aware at different ages; some never do at all. I think the kids who become politically aware at a very young age are mainly those whose parents are involved in politics, whether holding office or working on campaigns. When I was a kid, the little girl next door was taught to say her name and address, which she always followed with "Precinct 2"; her dad was involved in local politics. I'd say I started becoming political aware somewhere around eighth grade. When I was in seventh grade all of the students in our school were given a survey to fill out, and though I don't remember the …

Special elections, Walmart and the teachers' contract were all part of the town's politics this year.
Political stories were aplenty in Watertown in 2011, including a double helping of special elections, Walmart and teachers contracts.

By the way, I see that the Democrats are having a caucus for their convention. I will not be making negative comments about Steve Owen (who I happen to like). Nor will I make any wise cracks about having a bake sale to raise bail money for the next Democrat House Speaker. They all seem to have this problem with indictments. The Massachusetts Democrat Party may not be Titanic. But only because …   more ›
