Watertown Patch's Top 5 Sports Stories of 2012

Watertown celebrated its share of sporting triumphs this year, see the best of the year!

  1. Watertown High School took a magical ride through the boys' soccer state tournament this fall. The Raiders followed a solid regular season with series of tourney victories — many in overtime or on penalty kicks — that earned WHS its first state final berth. The Raiders' Cinderella story ended in Worcester in the final against Sutton. 2. Despite losing some top players from last year's state title team, the Raiders field hockey team rolled to its fourth straight state title. Watertown High School even improved from last year, finishing undefeated and untied. The team now has one of the longest winning streaks, ever, in the state and nation. 3. Week in Review: Watertown Beats Belmont, Council President Opposes Marijuana Dispensaries

  The Watertown High School football team ended years of frustration by beating archrival Belmont on Thanksgiving Day. Read highlights and see images from the game here.  Town Council President Mark Sideris said he wants to take steps to prevent a medical marijuana dispensary from opening in Watertown. Read the story and share your thoughts here. A shoplifter tried to steal sweaters and other items from Marshall's but he was caught by Watertown Police as he fled the Arsenal Mall. See where they caught the suspect. The first details of plans to clean up the former Army site on Greenough Boulevard were unveiled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers this week.
