Don't be alarmed if you see someone peeking in your recycling bin — Town officials want to know how much Watertown residents are recycling and how well the bins are being used. In August, the town switched to new recycling and trash pickup program, where residents have one 64-gallon toter for trash and a second for recycling. The recycling is picked up every other week, while trash is collected weekly. Some residents have complained that the recycling bins are not big enough, and asked for weekly pickup. The Town Council's Public Works Committee, however, decided that the cost would be too high to add weekly recycling. Some, however may be able to get a second recycling bin. Watertown residents have increased their recycling significantly, while reducing the amount of trash thrown out.
Watertown residents have taken to the new recycling program like gangbusters, and some have filled their recycling barrel for the biweekly collection, but the Town Council's Public Works Committee will not recommend moving to weekly recycling pickup. The cost of adding weekly recycling pickup would bee too high, the subcommittee decided, but they plan to offer some residents the opportunity to purchase a second recycling bin - also called toters. The town's new trash and recycling program began in early August, and the change in disposal habits has been noticeable, said Public Works Superintendent Gerald Mee. The roll out of the new trash and recycling program went very smoothly, in the vast majority of cases, Public Works Superintendent Gerald Mee told the Town Council Tuesday night. Most residents adjusted to the new system during the first week of the new program, which started on Aug. 6, Mee said. “We had roughly 99 percent compliance town wide,” Mee said. “The people of Watertown deserve to be applauded.” DPW officials followed around the trash and recycling trucks the first week and out of 3,500 pick ups, Mee said, only 15 to 20 used the wrong barrels or put out extra bags. The new system of single-stream recycling and automated trash pick up began this week, how do you like it?
Watertown's new trash and recycling program debuted this week, and Watertown Patch wants to know what you think. The new system requires people to put all their trash bags in the 64-gallon toter. The single stream recycling system allows all recyclables to go into one bin. Some of the comments have brought up the question of the "red" and "green" recycling bins. All the bins are green, but they should have the word red or green printed on top. This corresponds to the weeks that the recycling will be picked up. Have you had any problems? The start of the new trash and recycling program is just around the corner, and Tuesday night you can learn more about the program by heading to Town Hall or tuning into the Town Council meeting. The new program begins on Aug. 6, and Public Works Superintendent Gerald Mee is first up on the agenda for Tuesday's Town Council meeting, which begins at 7:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers in Town Hall. People can bring up to 6 tires to be recycled to the tire store on Galen Street.
Looking to get rid of some old tires – you can drop them off free at Direct Tire in Watertown and they will be recycled. The effort helps keep tires out of landfills and is a thank you to the Watertown community, said Direct Tire CEO Barry Steinberg. "With all the stories about landfills be overloaded with scrap tires we thought this would be a good 'green' thing to do for the town that has been so good to us since 1974 when I first opened," Steinberg said. A new automated trash collection program will begin on Monday, August 6, 2012. Automated collection truly upgrades the level of service that is provided to residents, fixed lid, wheeled carts not only provide a uniform appearance on collection day, they also reduce blowing trash, odors, animal scavenging and health concerns. And the toters are very easy for residents to move. Residents will receive a new 64 gallon toter for trash. Only the official Town of Watertown wheeled toters will be collected on trash day.
