Watertown's Tournament Run Falls Short as the Raiders Fall to Sutton in the Boys' Soccer Final

The Raiders held an early lead, but could not hold on during Saturday's MIAA Div. 3 boys' soccer state final in Worcester.

Watertown's magical run through the MIAA Div. 3 boys soccer tournament came up just short as the Raiders could not hold on to an early 1-0 lead and fell to Sutton in the state final, Saturday at Foley Stadium in Worcester. Despite the loss, Watetown coach Frank Cacia said the team accomplished more than any previous Raiders squad. "Give (Sutton) a lot of credit. They’ve been here before," Cacia said. "We scored the first goal, we didn’t lay down. I’m proud of the boys. It was an incredible run. I’m sure if I told them at the beginning of the year we would get to the state final they would tell me I was crazy." Before this year, the farthest the Raiders had advanced was the state semifinal.  The Raiders (15-3-6) took a 1-0 lead when junior …

Watertown Clinches Boys' Soccer State Final by Winning Another Penalty Shootout

The Raiders played to a 1-1 tie with Dover-Sherborn, and won the penalty shootout after goalie Greg Koutroukas saved one of the shots.

[NOTE: The scoring for Watertown's goal was updated on Nov. 19] Watertown's boys' soccer team has not done any favors to fans with heart conditions during its state tournament run. For the second straight state tournament game the Raiders took the game to a penalty shootout, and Wednesday night they won the shootout 5-3 over Dover-Sherborn to clinch a spot in the MIAA Div. 3 state final. The teams played an even, up-tempo game of soccer for 80 minutes of regulation, after which the game was tied 1-1. Two 10-minute periods of sudden death overtime did not settle matters, either, and it came down to spot kicks 12 yards from the goalie. Watertown (15-2-6) and Dover-Sherborn (17-6-1) both scored on their first shots, but in the second round …

The field hockey team returns to the state final seeking their fourth straight title, while the boys' soccer team used a penalty shootout to clinch its first final.

Oh what a night for Watertown Raiders' fans.  The Watertown High School field hockey team clinched yet another state final spot after defeating Apponequet 3-0 in the semifinal at Reading High School Wednesday evening, and hours later, the boys' soccer team won a second straight penalty shootout against Dover-Sherborn to get to their first state final in years, if ever. Soccer The Raiders struck first off a corner kick when Rafael DeSouza scored directly from a corner kick with 15 minutes left in the first half of the game played at Veterans Stadium in Quincy. The Raiders' boys' soccer and field hockey teams both take the field Wednesday seeking a spot in the state final.

Two Watertown High School teams play tonight for a berth in the state final. For one, that has become a regular in the state semifinals and another has not reached this point for years. The Raiders boys’ soccer team continued its historic run Monday by taking out Weston in the MIAA Div. 3 North Section final. Coach Frank Cacia said his team has shown resilience throughout the state tournament. “We got scored on in the first game (against Georgetown) with 25 seconds left and we came back and won it in overtime,” Cacia said. In Monday’s section final, the Raiders had a good shot to score the go ahead goal late in the game, but could not convert the breakaway opportunity. The team regrouped and won on penalty kicks. Watertown Boys Soccer Team Prevails on Penalty Kicks, Moves onto State Semifinal

The Raiders battled Weston to a 1-1 tie, and the teams needed a penalty shootout to decide the North Section title in Lynn on Monday.

Two evenly matched teams came into the North Section final Monday evening, and 100 minutes of soccer could not separate Watertown and Weston, so the game came down to penalty kicks. The Raiders grabbed the trophy after taking the game 5-3 on penalties. For the No. 6 seed Raiders (14-2-6) , the win means the farthest the team has advanced in the state tournament in recent memory, while the No. 8 Wildcats’ (12-5-3) season ended in heart wrenching fashion. Watertown coach Frank Cacia received two honors Monday, but one stood out. “It means everything. They notified me that I got Eastern Mass coach of the year and I told them that did not want to take the trophy and that I would trade it in for a North Sectional championship trophy,” Cacia …

Vardan Yeghiyan's hat trick leads the Raiders to a victory in the North Section semifinal on Saturday.

A blast by Watertown's Vardan Yeghiyan into the top corner of the goal ended any hope for Newburyport in the boys' soccer section semifinal and capped a hat trick for the junior striker Saturday afternoon at Lynn's Manning Field. The No. 6 seed Raiders' scored an historic victory, said Watertown coach Frank Cacia, as Watertown moved onto the MIAA North Section Div. 3 final. "At this stage it is whatever team wants it most. We've trained hard during the season, the boys worked their butts off in the off season," Cacia said. "I still believe we haven't peaked as a team. I still think we can get better in finishing the opportunities we had, but we just made history today making it to the finals." No. 10 seed Newburyport (11-7-2) pressured …
