Watertown Youngsters Test Their Skills at the Town-wide Spelling Bee [Video]

The third annual event raised money for the Watertown Education Foundation.

Dozens of young students teamed up to test their spelling chops Sunday during the third annual Town-wide Spelling Bee at Watertown Middle School. The event raises money for the Watertown Education Foundation, which hands out grants to teachers and others in the Watertown Public Schools, said Amy Donohue, president of the WEF. "Last year we raised close to $18,000 from the spelling bee," Donohue said. "This year we are looking for the same." The money raised at the event, combined with funds from the Team Trivia Night in the spring allowed the WEF to hand out more than $20,000 in grants last year (see the list of grants in the photos to the right). Second Annual Townwide Spelling Bee a Buzz with Young Spellers

About 275 Watertown students in grades 1 to 5 filled the Watertown Middle School auditorium Sunday for the event that benefited the Watertown Education Foundation.

With such a large number of eager young spellers, organizers of the second annual Town-Wide Youth Spelling Bee had to bring the students on stage in waves. The first spelling bee attracted about 60 Watertown students, but this year, organizer and Watertown Education Foundation President Amy Donohue found she had 275 youngsters from the three elementary schools - Hosmer, Lowell and Cunniff. "We added one extra grade – first grade," Donohue said. Donohue helped the parents and teachers who helped organize the event. Besides giving students a chance to test their spelling skills, it raised money for the Watertown Education Foundation. "All the money raised will go to teacher grant money," Donohue said. "During these difficult times it is …

I mean they are allowed to take the monies from the fundraising events, but then told they can't participate in making that …   more ›
