The girls 4 x 100 relay team claimed its third title in a row and the boys 4 x 800 relay made a huge improvement to take the crown.
One used a burst of speed, while the other used patience, but both Watertown High School relay teams took the title at the MIAA Div. 4 Track Championships at North Reading High School on Saturday. Seeded second, the boys' 4 x 800 relay team obliterated its best time of the year, said coach Tom Wittenhagen. "They ran 8:15.89, and dropped 16 seconds," Wittenhagen said. "That is an incredible amount – by far the most dropped by any team (at the meet)." Wittenhagen said his runners – Kevin Eskici, Alex Ambila, Emilio Alvarez and Ethan LeClair – ran a smart race by running the first lap smooth and then running hard the second time around the track. "They could have been hero runners and passed a lot of people the first lap and then lose it at …

The team ran its third-best time of the season at the New Balance Nationals in New York City. They hope to qualify for the Outdoor Nationals this spring.
When the indoor track season began, Watertown High School girls’ coach David Mastro had not thoughts about sending runners to Nationals, but now he looks forward to a return trip during the upcoming outdoor track season. The girls’ 4 x 200 relay qualified for the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City, where they ran a 1:47.59 to finish 29th in the Emerging Elite Division last Friday. “I’m really proud of them and what they achieved,” Mastro said. “If you told me in the beginning of the season they would make nationals I would have had a hard time seeing it.” The team had the core of a national-caliber team, with seniors Talia Flores, Lauren Basile and Meaghan Kelly returning, but he needed to find an anchor leg. “We had several …

The foursome continues to trim time off their runs each time they hit the track and they have one final performance at the Indoor Nationals on Friday.
Each time the Watertown High School girls 4 x 200 relay team has hit the track this season they improved their time, except once, and they bounced back from that race to get all the way to the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City this weekend. Since their first meet in December, the team of Talia Flores, Lauren Basile, Meaghan Kelly – all seniors – and junior Christelle Madou have knocked more than 10 seconds off their time and in the last five weeks they have dropped 1.5 seconds off the Nationals qualifying time. The team’s improvements has impressed Watertown High School girls’ track coach David Mastro. “They are one of the few teams in the 4 x 200 (relay) that has improved every meet,” Mastro said. “They improved every time …
