The program gives gifts to less fortunate children in Watertown in honor of former Watertown Police officer Sonny Whooley.
Dear Contributors, The Whooley Foundation is a non-profit organization that was founded in the memory of John “Sonny” Whooley a Watertown Police Officer, resident, father and husband. He loved our community and served it for over 30 years as a Watertown Police Sergeant. He had a special place in his heart for those less fortunate than himself. He always strived to make children a little happier during the holiday season. This year, in addition to over two hundred children from Watertown helped by the Whooley Foundation, we were also able to give assistance to the Watertown Food Pantry and an inner city Catholic learning center, to our list of recipients. The Whooley Foundation Board of Directors is happy to continue this legacy, however …

The Whooley Foundation would like to thank all of the sponsors and citizens that contributed to this years Christmas. This Foundation was formed in the memory of John “Sonny” Whooley a Watertown Police Officer, resident, father and husband. He loved the community and served it for over thirty years as a Watertown Police Sergeant. He always had a special place in his heart for those less fortunate. He was a man who would assist others in any way he could and during the holiday’s he was the Secret Santa to many. He would always strive to make others just a little happier during the holidays. Volunteers bagged up toys so hundreds of children in Watertown can have Christmas gifts.
Dozens of black plastic bags were filled with games, dolls, and other toys in the Community Room at the Watertown Police Station today, bound for hundreds of needy children in Watertown. The holiday gift program was started by John "Sonny" Whooley, a former Watertown Police sergeant. For the past 24 years, his colleagues have helped keep the late-Whooley's spirit of giving alive, said Detective Dave Collins. We were the lucky recipients of this wonderful program several years back. My husband was battling cancer, and thus unemployed, and we had 3 young boys. I never found out how they got our name, but miraculously, a few days before Christmas, a giant bag filled with toys showed up on my doorstep! I cried.
