To the Citizens of Watertown, I want to thank all the people who supported me in the recent election, from those who spread my message of commitment to Watertown’s overall sustainability, to those who held signs, worked the polls, assisted in the recount, and of course, cast their much appreciated votes. Serving as Vice President on the Town Council affords me the privilege of serving all the people of Watertown. I hold that privilege as a mandated responsibility to listen carefully and respond thoughtfully to all the voices that together make Watertown such a highly desirable place to live and raise our families. Recent concerns about the prospect of Walmart coming to Watertown shine a bright light on the need for the Town Council in …

The recount of the Nov. 8 election took several hours, and Mandel picked up 2 votes.
Steve Corbett was declared the winner of the final at-large Town Council seat after the recount of the Nov. 8 election was completed Thursday, reaffirming Watertown residents' vote that gave the Town Council Vice President a narrow victory over write-in candidate Mike Mandel. Poll workers and election observers filled the Watertown Savings Bank Room at the Watertown Free Public Library Thursday. After several hours of counting, the vote finally became official, and Mandel had picked up 2 votes. The difference was 89 votes. "I'm feeling good. I'm glad it's concluded," Corbett said after the recount concluded at about 4:40 p.m. Thursday. "It was a long day to find out there was a difference of two votes." Corbett said he looks forward to …

The four men vying for the Second Suffolk and Middlesex state senate seat appeared at the Church of the Good Shepherd
In a race with no incumbent, the four candidates running for the Second Suffolk and Middlesex State Senate seat split into two, with current state representatives Will Brownsberger of Belmont and Jonathan Hecht of Watertown touting their experience on Beacon Hill, and former state firefighters union president Bob McCarthy and Brighton attorney Tim Schofield talking about ways they would shake up things in Senate. The candidates got their first chance to face each other in public Tuesday night at a candidate forum run and hosted by the Church of the Good Shepherd in Watertown. The district includes all of Watertown and Belmont and parts of Brighton, Allston, the Fenway, the Back Bay and Cambridge. McCarthy, a lifelong Watertown resident, …

Many years ago when we were struggling to build the Watertown Boys and Girls Club, Malcolm Hecht joined our effort and our board. He was owner of Unitrode Corp. on Pleasant Street that employed our citizens. He added an additional level of sophistication on our board, provided reasoned advice, along with a sizable donation. He was a very wise and humble man. Fast forward 40 years. When I heard the house at the top of Russell Avenue had been sold, I was told that a man named Jonathan Hecht had bought it. I thought to myself and said to others, I’ll bet that is one of Malcolm’s sons. My first thought was that this would be good for Watertown. And boy was it ever! Jonathan headed the Watertown Community Foundation that we established with …

New AFL-CIO President express "disappointment" with Brownsberger, Hecht on reform vote.
In the heart of the hometown of one of his primary candidates, Steve Tolman stood side-by-side with the man he sees as his successor "caring about working people At a press conference in front of Belmont's Beech Street Center attended by the Boston Globe, The Boston Phoenix and the Watertown weekly, the former long-time state senator heaped praise on Robert McCarthy, the former Watertown Fire Department captain and past head of the state's fire fighters union who is challenging three candidates with campaign and legislative experience. "I am honored to be with you here today and I am going to work my heart out to make sure that we have you as our next state senator," said Tolman as he hugged McCarthy. "Because no one cares more about the …

The councilor at large discusses an issue that has divided the Watertown community.

Dear Friends and Neighbors: Thank you for getting out to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 8; and for allowing me to continue to serve as your Councilor at Large for a third term. I cannot adequately express my debt of gratitude for your belief in my ability to represent all residents on all issues. While the election season started out with only the School Committee as a contested race, it certainly did not end that way. For the first time in recent history, we all experienced an issue that attempted to divide our community. Watertown could not afford to relapse into a past that proved to be detrimental on so many levels. And thanks to your vote, you sent a clear message to make certain that did not happen again. We all agree and accept that …

The following letter was released by Mike Mandel: In last week's election Watertown voters made a resounding statement by writing my name on the ballot to keep Walmart out of our town. This issue brought together so many people from different backgrounds, young families and seniors, people who have been in Watertown for generations and who recognize the rich history and character of our community, along with people who have come here more recently because of the unique quality of life that Watertown offers to us all. My candidacy has served as an instrument for our collective voice that want a Watertown that will build and grow with an intelligent and comprehensive plan for economic development. We will settle for nothing less than that to…

The former Watertown firefighter and union president said he plans to focus on helping veterans and seniors.
State Senate candidate Bob McCarthy invited over a group of former servicemen to honor them, and for one particular soldier who just returned from 2 years in Afghanistan with the Army. Major James Maloney served as an engineer in a special-forces unit and will soon return to his regular job as a member of the Watertown Fire Department. As his 10-year-old daughter Maria watched, he received a 9/11 award trophy from McCarthy, depicting the firefighters raising the flag at Ground Zero. McCarthy — himself a veteran of the Navy’s submarine force — said veterans do not share their accomplishments in the Military with others. “They don’t wear it on their sleeves,” McCarthy said. “I think they should start wearing it on their sleeves. You should …

The write-in candidate seeks input from supporters before deciding whether to ask for the recount.
Voters cast their votes Tuesday, but the election may not be quite over as write-in Town Council candidate Mike Mandel is still considering calling for a recount of the at-large councilor race. Mandel, whose campaign focused on preventing Walmart from coming to town, came with 91 votes of incumbent Council Vice President Steve Corbett. He said Thursday that he wants to hear from his supporters before he makes up his mind. "I'm not officially saying I'm going for a recount," Mandel said. "I am interested in contacting people who supported me to solicit ideas for reasons why I should and why I should not go for a recount." Mandel said he contacted Town Clerk John Flynn, who said the request must be made within 10 day of the election, which …
