Watertown Middle School's Washington D.C. Trip Likely to Go Ahead

Principal Kimo Carter said he believes he can find chaperones if the teachers cannot go due to their contract dispute.

Watertown Middle School’s eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., will likely go ahead, whether or not the teachers go along as chaperones, said WMS Principal Kimo Carter. The annual trip has been threatened because teachers, who usually serve as chaperones, will not go if the teachers’ contract is not settled by the time the trip occurs in June. Carter said he was able to find enough people outside of the union to come along on the trip. “We have enough people to push forward so parents can pay deposits,” Carter said. “I think it will end up working out OK even if teachers can’t go.” Carter estimates he will need 16 to 18 chaperones – one for every 10 students – and he could get them by finding principals, administrators and central office…

When I first heard about this yesterday, I'd hoped this meant that our School Committee had bargained in good faith and settled the dispute. No such luck. Any update on the complaint made to the Massachusetts division of Labor Relations?   more ›

Watertown Middle School Students, Parents Plea for DC Trip to Go On

The eighth-grade class president asked the School Committee, teachers to settle contract so the trip will not be cancelled.

Parents Plead with School Committee to Settle Teachers Contract

Watertown's schools have suffered, parents say, and they worry about the loss of activities such as the eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C.

Parents pleaded with the School Committee to work with the teachers union end the standoff and settle the teachers contract as soon as possible. “I want to know if the School Committee has dedicated itself and will define a time table to come to terms with this ridiculous dispute,” said parent Susan Kinnear at Monday’s School Committee meeting. The dispute has put a pall over the Watertown schools, said parent Sarah Ryan. “Because we have such great teachers we have a great community at the middle school,” Ryan said. “(Because of the contract dispute) it is subdued, we have lost some of that.” Parent Jay Hughes said he and other parents are confused about why the contract has not been settled after more than 500 days. He wondered if the …
