The Worlds of Sholem Aleichem
The New Center for Arts & Culture and The Yiddish Book Center present a discussion between Yiddish
literature experts and authors Jeremy Dauber and Aaron Lansky, on
Dauber’s new biography of Sholem Aleichem. Aleichem was the creator of Tevye
the Dairyman, the stories that inspired Fiddler on the Roof, one of the world’s most beloved musicals.
While today recognized
for his contributions to Yiddish literature and performing arts, Sholem
Aleichem's own life story is equally as compelling as his characters. Born “Sholem
Rabinovitz” in Ukraine in 1859 to an impoverished family, Aleichem turned to
his pen to support himself. Dauber will recount Aleichem’s fascinating journey
and rise to prominence as the literary voice of the Jewish masses.
