Police Set Up Coordinator for Watertown Residents With Property Damaged From the Shootout

The coordinator will look at damage and see if help can be found for damage not covered by insurance, and deductibles.

Homeowners on Laurel Street and Dexter Avenue woke up the morning after Watertown Police fought with the Boston Marathon Bombing suspects to find bullet holes in their walls and damage from bomb shrapnel.

The Watertown Police now have a person to whom property owners can turn if they are having difficulties getting damage covered by insurance, or even to get help paying insurance premiums.

Capt. Raymond DuPuis has met with and talked to seven people who live in the area of the gun battle.

"One house has 10 bullet holes on the side of it," DuPuis said. "Some went through the outside wall and into an interior wall. And some had pieces of vinyl siding damaged."

Insurance will cover most of the damage, but some expenses may have to come out of pocket.

"We’ve talked a lot people, and gone down to look at the damage to see if insurance will cover it," DuPuis said. "Some have a $1,000 deductible."

The town is working with State Reps. Jonathan Hecht and John Lawn, State Sen. Will Brownsberger and Congressman Markey's office to find assistance for those paying insurance premiums.

"We don’t want them to pay for it if they don’t have to," DuPuis said.

Residents of Franklin Street and surrounding streets who suffered damage when Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured can work with the FBI, DuPuis said.

Capt. Raymond DuPuis can be reached at 617-972-6500.
